Mast Rake

Inlägg av FIN 10962 »

Hi everyone
I think this one of the most topic discussion, but have enyone measure the angle of the mast, when you are using headstay of 8400.
Recomendation usually is 2-4%.
I have get my IF 2007 from Sweden and sail it to Finland.
I'm not sure how good IF sails goes to the upwind because here where i sail, is no other IF to compare. I think i have lot to improve there and one issue is that mast rake.

Regards
Jussi

I measure my current headstay lenght and it is about 8000.
Thats why i am little bit confuse, because i dont know have i measure wrong way or what.
But i can add 400mm for headstay.
So for me to understand better, have someone measure angle of the mast when headstay is 8400 ?
I ususally measure mast rake from the boom.

Thanks for unswer so far

Older headstays are about 8000 mm.

Unscrew your forestay turnbucckle as much as possible and add 2 toggles. This will make about 8350 mm of total length, measured from the mast fitting to the deck fitting and including turnbuckle and toggles.

The mast rake is just for acheiving the proper balance when sailing closed hauled. If ou have no toggles available, you may try first without, wchich will make about 8250-8300 mm of total forestay length.

Standing in the longitudinal CG position and hanging some heavy item in the main halyard, the longitudinal distance between the mast and the halyard may be measured at boom height. Older trimming reccomendations said 400 mm, wchich makes 2.6 degrees, as the vertical distance between upper and lower limit mark is 8750 mm. I think the recommendation of today may be somewhat larger to correspond to the forestay length.

Remember to remove all heavy items from the boat ends when measuring.. :!: ..
